What’s Biting?
The seasons are changing and this offers anglers an opportunity at a variety of species. April may be the best month of the year for multiple species of fish. There typically is a hot sailfish bite early in season with plenty of Mahi around offshore as well. There is also a strong Blackfin Tuna bite in the evenings and large Kingfish around. Big Yellowfins are being caught in the Bahamas and on the moon we can expect numerous wahoo still. April and May are also great months for Big Swordfish. Spring time fishing offers an abundant of opportunities
How do we catch them?
With so many species available going out with a plan for each species is key. Focus on live baiting and kite fishing specifically for Sailfish, Kings, and Tuna. Traditional trolling for Mahi and High Speed trolling works best for wahoo. Chunking for Yellowfin Tuna can be a productive technique or check our seminar on Yellowfin Tuna fishing without live bait. Have a variety of set ups on board ranging from Conventional Kite fishing reels like Talica 16’s to larger trolling set ups such as 50s. Our pre rigged Mahi and wahoo lures are a fast and efficient way to switch gears and our Kite fishing kit has everything you need to be ready. Check out our How to’s page and Blogs for more in depth information on catching your target species.
Pro Tips
When Kite fishing it is important to change your baits frequently, especially when you notice them getting lethargic. To entice a bite from a stubborn fish, a frisky live bait will be your best shot. Goggle Eye or Threadfin Herring are the go to rigged on 40lb flouro leaders with a mustad 39951np-bn or Musatd 39938np-bn when targeting sailfish. When targeting meat fish (king mackerel and wahoo) we use 40 or 50lb AFW Titanium with a 6/0 Mustad 9174np-bn or Mustad big gun 10829np-bn with a google eye from the kite and a 4/0 or 5/0 hook with a threadfin herring, pilchard, or sardine. When targeting Blackfin tuna a circle hook Mustad 39951np-bn or a J hook Mustad 9174np-bn with 40lb fluoro is ideal with a sardine, pilchard, or threadfin herring.
When Yellowfin Tuna fishing adjusting your leader size can be the difference maker. Tuna have amazing eye site. We typically use 80 lb leader but when the bite is tough dropping down to 60 lb could entice the bite.
Blue and Pink have been a hot color on the troll- If you are noticing a single color getting more action don’t hesitate to go all in on that color and change out all your lines.
